New Antibiotics Prevents Hearing Loss By: Ayanna Flegler, PreScouter Global ScholarBacterial infections remain a constant threat to human health. Although attempts have been made to develop new antibiotics preventing hearing loss, a difficulty has been that newly developed antibiotics are less potent...

When I played in bands during high school and college, I always tried to mimic him in some way, mostly by being an idiot and trashing my cheap guitar...

Modifying Aminoglycoside Eliminates Hearing Loss Side Effect

Posted by CENTURY HEARING

A new version of a common antibiotic may allow patients to be treated without the risk of hearing loss, according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.Patients who take an aminoglycoside, the most commonly used class of antibiotics worldwide, risk a 20% to 60% chance of losing their hearing permanently. However, researchers at the Stanford University of Medicine recently tested a modified version of an aminoglycoside that works in mice without the adverse side effects of deafness or kidney damage.Often prescribed when other antibiotics fail, aminoglycosides are active against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria and can be used...

Vitamin Supplement (Nicotinamide Riboside) Successfully Prevents Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Posted by CENTURY HEARING

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College and the Gladstone Institutes have found a way to prevent noise-induced hearing loss in a mouse using a simple chemical compound that is a precursor to vitamin B3. This discovery has important implications not only for preventing hearing loss, but also potentially for treating some aging-related conditions that are linked to the same protein.Published today in Cell Metabolism, the researchers used the chemical nicotinamide riboside (NR) to protect the nerves that innervate the cochlea. The cochlea transmits sound information through these nerves to the spiral ganglion, which then passes along those messages to the...
