Sarasota, Florida -- An audiologist is under arrest for selling patients what they thought were new hearing aids, when he was recycling used ones in a warranty scheme.
Dr. Stephen Goff, 62, of North Port, is charged with one count of scheme to defraud. He was booked into the county jail, and was released on $1,500 bond.
According to investigators, from January to May 2013 a patient would buy a hearing aid from Goff who would take the warranty and file a loss and damage report. He would then sell the new aids to other patients.
Goff would charge the patients for a new device, even though the hearing aid was used.
The case involves 10 patients.
The estimated loss to Northland Hearing Centers was $19,660.
