What can go wrong with hearing aids?

Hearing aids are complex instruments. They have multiple working parts. One or more of the components of a hearing aid might malfunction, necessitating repairs. These parts include:

  • Battery compartment
  • Internal components
  • Earmold
  • Microphone
  • Amplifier

High-grade hearing aids last several years on average. However, over time, hearing aid repairs may become necessary to fix damaged products. Millions of Americans experience the health effects of hearing loss (about 15% of American adults). In many cases, hearing aids are an optimal solution. An estimated 28 million Americans may benefit from the use of a hearing aid. According to a 2017 hearing survey conducted by the Hearing Health Foundation, at least 40% of Americans lack any healthcare coverage for hearing healthcare or hearing aids. Unfortunately, that means that millions of Americans struggle to pay for their hearing aids. In many cases, hearing aid repair is significantly more affordable for people than purchasing new hearing aids. Here's what you should know about hearing aid repair.

Troubleshooting common hearing aid issues

Sometimes, the solution to a minor hearing aid issue is simple enough that you can resolve it at home. Here are a few quick fixes that might help:

  • Check your volume control
  • Make sure the hearing aid is switched on
  • Ensure the batteries are positioned properly
  • Check the tubing in your BTE (behind-the-ear) model (this can be easily replaced)

Try these fixes first when you encounter troubles. If they don't resolve your issue, then seek professional help for further diagnostics.

An audiologist can help with hearing aid troubleshooting

When you first seek hearing healthcare, you'll visit a hearing care professional. Audiologists, doctors who practice hearing care (audiology) assist people in achieving better hearing across the US, from Seattle to Wichita to Miami. In addition to optimizing hearing health in their patients with a hearing test and hearing aid prescription, audiologists can assist patients with hearing aid troubleshooting. In some cases, like the examples cited above where only minor adjustments/replacements are required, a local audiologist can restore hearing aid function without costly repairs.

How to avoid hearing aid repair

To avoid unnecessary costly repairs, hearing aid users can take a few precautions to keep their hearing devices in working order:

  • Keep up with regular maintenance
  • Avoid earwax buildup (change your wax filter regularly)
  • Always remove your hearing aid when swimming or showering
  • Use high-quality models of hearing aids (ReSound, Miracle Ear, Phonak)

What to do if you need hearing aid repairs

Life happens, no matter how careful you are. As with any medical device, normal wear and tear sometimes results in damage to the hearing aid that requires expert attention from a technician. At a low price point of $249, Century Hearing Aids offers a full 12-month warranty on all repairs. We also include complementary USPS Priority Shipping to return your repaired hearing aid as soon as possible.

Hearing aid repair vs new hearing aids

With hearing aid repair services at Century Hearing we specialize in the expert reconstruction of hearing aids. In many cases, engaging the technical expertise of a hearing aid expert has two main benefits over buying a new one:

  • Repair is more cost-effective. Custom-made hearing aids, especially, are costlier to replace than to repair.
  • You don't need to familiarize yourself with the features of new models.

People who pay out-of-pocket for hearing aids, in particular, should carefully consider the potential cost savings of hearing aid repair vs buying them new. High-quality hearing aids typically last 3-7 years. If your hearing aid is older than that, it might make more sense to buy a new one. In most circumstances, though, repair is the more cost-effective option.

The importance of a warranty for hearing aid repair

Hearing aid repair is more affordable than buying new hearing aids, but it isn't cheap. Accordingly, people want the peace of mind of knowing that their hearing aid repair was a good investment. A warranty can help protect your wallet as well as your hearing function.

$249 per hearing aid includes hearing aid repair, thorough cleaning and one year warranty.
